NAHB Student Chapters provide students interested in construction real world exposure to the home building industry through NAHB membership benefits, educational programming and networking opportunities. Student chapters can be created at high schools and at trade schools, colleges and universities offering two-year or four-year programs.
Connie Highnote's architectural and engineering drawing students took a break from their CAD software to get hands-on building experience last fall and this fall. Through a partnership with the Home Builders Association of Douglas County/Westside HBA, the students spent several Saturdays building a playhouse that will be raffled off on December 11, 2020. Proceeds will support student activities for the Home Builders Association and SkillsUSA, an organization of students, teachers and industry that work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
Through the project, students learned the design process, how to take field measurements, how to frame a building and more.
Ms. Highnote, who has certifications.(I have a master's degree in Instructional Technology and my program is industry certified).., has taught 20 years at Chapel Hill High School (the school opened a year before I started teaching here). " The best way for students to learn is through hands-on projects. They love seeing the results of their work and I enjoy watching them learn."
Several of Ms. Highnote's students have taken the skills they learned in her class to the next level. One example is Michael Awalt, who completed the Architectural drawing pathway at CHHS. He majored in architecture at Rice University in Texas and now works for Selldorf Architects in NY.
SPECIAL THANK YOU TO: "Jerry Long, BFS/Outside Sales Proffessional, helped us out in securing the majority of the materials and transporting the play house." Quote from Leslie Choo/Lake Forest builders
The NAHB Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational experiences of students by offering them first-hand exposure to the real world of the building industry through NAHB membership, educational programming, and connections to builders.
